⚠ THE PANIC METER · THIS WEEK
5/10 · Keep calm, check your bills.
Voice-clone scams are getting more convincing and the AI job news is mixed. But most of what's new this week is genuinely useful, and the best defenses cost nothing. First reading.
Issue 1 · Week of October 12, 2026 · This week's lead
A $195,000 hospital bill, cut to $33,000
Hello from the bunker.
Here's the deal. Every Friday morning we go through what people are actually doing with AI, throw out the hype, and keep the five things most worth trying this weekend: the ones that save money, save hours or keep you from getting scammed.
If AI has you somewhere between curious and alarmed, you're in the right place. This week we lead with one of the best real-world examples yet of AI saving a family serious money: a hospital bill that shrank by $162,000. Plus the five-minute family conversation that beats a voice-cloning scam.
This Week's Five
The most useful things to try this weekend.
01 · Have AI check your hospital bill
Save Money · Try it now. One of the best real-world cases of AI saving a family money, first shared in October 2025: they asked for the itemized bill, pasted it into Claude, found charges billed twice, and got $195,000 down to about $33,000. Ask for the version with billing codes; that's where the errors hide.
02 · Pick a family safe word. Today.
Stay Safe · Try it now. Scammers can clone a loved one's voice from a few seconds of video. Agree on a private word, and if a panicked call asks for money or gift cards, hang up and call back on the number you already have.
03 · Let AI draft your flight-delay refund
Save Money · Try it now. Stranded eight hours in Salt Lake City, a Yahoo Finance host asked an AI assistant what he could claim. Five minutes later he knew where to file, and Delta sent $250 in credits. Tell it the flight, the delay and what happened. It works out what the airline owes you and writes the request. You hit send.
04 · Hunt for unclaimed money under your old names
Save Money · 15-minute job. Ask it to list the official unclaimed-property sites for every state you've lived in and search each under every name you've used. Searching is free; never pay a "finder."
05 · Walk into Mom's appointment with a prep sheet
Home & Family · Try it now. Paste in her medications and what's changed lately. Ask for a one-page summary and five questions for the doctor. You stop forgetting; the doctor still decides.
THIS WEEK'S WORRY
Will AI push me into early retirement?
Boston College researchers found that late-career workers in the most AI-exposed jobs, like programmers and accountants, have been leaving work more often since ChatGPT arrived. In an AARP survey, 24% of the workers polled saw AI as a threat to their line of work; only 19% saw an opportunity.
The flip side: many CEOs say they plan to trim junior roles and lean on mid-level and senior people instead. Experience is still the asset.
What to actually do: the risk lands hardest on people who never touch the tools. Try one of this week's five at work, and keep a list of what it saved you.
Dispatches from the Slopocalypse
Slop Watch: the Heroic Animal Video
A monkey snatches a toddler off a balcony railing. An elephant wades into a flood to rescue a tiger. Both clips went viral this year. Both were made by AI. Fact-checkers traced the monkey clip to an Instagram account whose own bio says it makes AI fiction.
Tap the account. Does its bio say "AI" or "fiction"?
Would a real news outlet have this? Search it.
Perfectly framed at the perfect moment? Suspicious.

Prompt of the week: the bill checker
Copy this into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini along with an itemized bill. Works on hospital, dental, phone and contractor bills.
I'm pasting an itemized bill below. Go line by line and explain each charge in plain English. Flag anything that looks duplicated, miscoded, unusually expensive or not clearly explained. Then write a short, polite letter I can send asking the billing department to review those items. Don't tell me what's legal; tell me what to ask.
